Please tell us about yourself
Hi, my name is Derek Alleyne Martin and I am a Kérastase Ambassador at Olab Par Rodrigo which is the salon I am working at currently. I’ve been self-employed for about 4 years and a Kérastase fanatic since the day I started doing hair.
What was your experience growing up with curls?
Growing up with curly hair was very difficult because in the early 2000s the image of perfect hair was straight, and I haven’t gotten the chance to embrace my curl at a young age. Fast forward to a couple of years, I decided to invest myself on my natural curly hair and to tell myself curly is beautiful too.
How did you learn to embrace your natural curls?
I started embracing my curls when I started hair school. I have noticed the schools only taught us how to deal with straight hair and not curly hair so from that day I stopped relaxing my hair, cut it all off to start fresh and self-educate myself with me and my family’s curl.
If you could turn back time, what would you say to your younger self?
If I could go back in time and tell my younger self-something, I would say, “stop relaxing your hair and embrace the curls! Society has a certain image of what beauty is, but you should know that there is not only one sort of beauty. Curly is beyond beautiful and I can’t wait for you to experience it.”
How do you achieve the perfect and healthy curl look? Any tips?
How I achieve my perfect curls:
1. Wash my hair with the most hydrating shampoo;
2. Treat my hair for 5 to 10 min just to lock in moisture;
3. After towel drying my hair, I use a curl-perfecting cream;
4. Then, I use oil to lock in my moisture and air dry.
